Flat River - North Country Trail

The Flat River is not always what the name suggests. There is actually a current not unlike most rivers this size in Michigan, but the Flat does not seem to fluctuate in size and speed like the Grand or Kalamazoo. A series of dams on the Flat River keep the flow pretty consistent.

Put-in is at the McPherson Street bridge where there is a parking lot for hikers and disc golf. There is one portage around a dam - keep to the right. Take-out is at the public boat launch next to the Lowell library with plenty of posts to choose from to chain up your water craft.

The hike back to your vehicle is entirely on the established, official route of the North Country Trail!

About 7 miles paddling / 7 miles hike back.
