If you want to get a little taste of what a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness would be like - try this one!
Five lakes, some streams, at least 2 portages. Big choppy water and some quiet calm water. This route has it all along with a hike on a portion of the established North Country Trail. Be sure to have a decent map especially of Gun Lake. It's bigger than you think and you might want to use your map & compass to shoot directly to your next point.
Put-in at the public boat launch on Baker Lake.
Take-out at the public boat launch on Long Lake and chain your craft to a tree. From the boat launch take the 2-track west a little till you see the "No Camping" sign and head straight north into the woods till you meet up with the Long Lake Trail. Take that trail until you meet up with the North Country Trail.
About 7 miles paddling / 4 miles hike back.
